A year in Nagasaki

A desription of my final preparations during august and the fun time in Amsterdam during that time up to my year at the university of Nagasaki from the 1st october 2005 thru august 2006. Together with 9 other students from the University of Leiden, Holland, we are on an extra-curricular year to improve our conversational skills. Will it work ??

Sakura

.
One of the biggest events in the whole of Japan is the "Sakura" 桜 season. The before totally barren cherry trees start to bud and bloom within a matter of days at the end of March through the middle of April, where the ones in the southern prefectures will ofcourse bloom earlier than the ones up north. People will go and see them with friends and family and even organize picnics and boozing parties in the evening in the parks. This is called "Hanami" 花見, where Hana = blossoms and Mi = to see. The colour is either white or a beautiful pale pink. Here in Nagasaki the best known place to go to is Tateyama Park 立山公園 , located up against a hill and close to the Suwa Shrine. But even the little park opposite our Student Hall is just crammed with these trees and the local residents have put up lanterns to make the place look more festive.

Celebrated Alexandra's Birthday last night with the well known Nomihodai in a place close by. Unfortunately it was absolutely pouring down when we came out so needed to take a cab home.

Today too...lotsa rain but things seem to be improving..... well, you know the saying: every cloud has a silver lining.........

    Hi Paul,
Having a bit of Sakura here myself. The tree in the back garden has burst into bloom and I am suffering from hay fever - it's the only pollen to which I am allergic. Could this be a biological warning not to visit the land of the rising sun? I leave that thought in your mind.
I think I shall have a boozy picnic so that I can share the celebrations with you. I'll turn on the garden lights and open a bottle of cider. Tres chic, tres moi.
You are certainly getting about now. Lots of visits and I love seeing the pics. Love the tiny motor bikes. They have them here. A company that drives your car home for you when you're drunk sends the driver on one of these which is then put in the boot of the car so that once you're home he can belt off on his mini moto.
Hope the book reading is going well. I am rather surprised that you haven't got the sexual inuendo perfected yet. That's always the first bit I go for. Usually get it wrong but it's a good conversation starter. Dean's tribunal is on the 18th and 19th and we have hired and HR specialist to help. Couldn't afford a lawyer which was going to cost several thousand. This is a cheaper alternative but the woman knows her stuff. She was the HR director for Gap, Europe. She's also a friend and is giving us a mates rate. Have been having a long distance relationship with a lad from Nottingham called Steve. You know how I just love long distance relationships!! All e-mails and skype and webcams. It's a hoot. Sexy man too - 39. Works on TV dramas as a focus puller. Don't ask cos I've no idea.
Right I must be off. Miss you lots. Hope everything is going well for you.
    Cheers
    Chris
